Commercial tax consultants and the trader community in the Diamond City are upset with the Goods and Service Tax (GST) Council and the central government for ignoring their demand for rectification of technical issues on the GST portal, which have left thousands of tax payers in the lurch.
Tax consultants stated that the GST portal was under maintenance since last two days and not a single return was uploaded. The 3B format of the GST, too, was changed without any prior notice to the assessees. Now, the tax consultants will have to change their software to match the changed 3B format.
Talking to TOI, president of South Gujarat Commercial Tax Bar Association (SGCTBA) Prashant Shah said, “The government had issued notification on November 15, allowing quarterly filing of GSTR-1 return for traders having turnover below Rs 1.5 crore. It has been almost one month since the notification was issued, the portal is not accepting the quarterly return and the penalty amount is getting accumulated in the traders’ account.”
During his visit to Surat, Union finance minister Arun Jaitely had promised the representatives from the trade and industry that GST portal issues will be resolved at the earliest. However, not a single technical issue concerning the portal has been addressed.
Shah added, “The central government has not kept its promise for simplifying the GST procedure and rectifying the portal issues.”
According to Shah, the SGCTBA is meeting the state GST and central GST commissioners in Ahmedabad on December 26, where they will strongly represent the issues faced by consultants and traders.
“We can’t run the show like this. If they have to implement GST, do it properly or otherwise the entire tax consultant community in Gujarat will boycott filing of GST returns on the portal,” Shah said.
Chairman of the South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (SGCCI) textile committee Devkishan Manghani said, “Many small traders having turnover below Rs 1.5 crore are unable to upload their quarterly return from July to September on the GST portal. The GST portal is not supporting the quarterly return format. Then why the government has issued notification for quarterly return. This government has failed to implement GST in its true spirit.”
